A spectacular fire Thursday night in Greenport has leveled a well known garage and closed Rt. 9. Jerry's Garage located at 2771 Rt. 9 has been a fixture in the community for three generations. The garage had closed its doors about 9 years ago. The owner, Jeffrey Goldman, is also a Greenport firemen who fought the fire. For over 50 years, Jerry's Garage was Jeff Goldman's life. He said the building was not insured and said the building was for sale. Goldman said money from the sale of the building was going to pay off his debt and help him with a recent divorce settlement. He said that the garage contained tools, lifts, compressors and lubricants used in a repair business. www.lancewheelervideo.com Five fire companies were on the scene. Greenport, Claverack, Churchtown, Livingston and Germantown battling the blaze. The Coumbia County Cause and Origin team are on the scene. Story: Fire destroys defunct Greenport garage A fully involved blaze totaled a defunct Greenport garage Thursday evening. Jerry's Garage, closed since 2004, was fully engrossed in high-shooting flames by the time firefighters were called to the scene on state Routes 9 and 23 at approximately 8:49 p.m. Shocks from downed electric lines mixing with the fire briefly posed additional hazards as flames blew out of the windows and the ceiling, bringing parts of the structure crumbling onto an old Ford flatbed truck parked in front of the building. www.lancewheelervideo.com For more of this story, click on or type the URL below: http://www.registerstar.com/articles/...
