This week on Dig Deeper we are discussing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) with Dr. Reham Awwad, plastic surgeon and co-founder of Restore FGM, the first multidisciplinary center in the MENA region rehabilitating women affected by FGM. “87 percent of girls or women between the ages of 15 and 49, have undergone FGM in Egypt, and the WHO has claimed that over 250 million women have already been affected by FGM worldwide,” explains Dr. Reham FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It affects women’s normal function of urination, menstruation, intercourse, etc. Restore FGM is working not only to heal the physical aspects of FGM but also to help women overcome the detrimental psychological effects.
