ABRSM 2025-26 grade 5 C:2 One of Martha Mier's very best inspirations. It's from Book 4 of her series 'Jazz, Rags and Blues' (1998) and you can also find it in ABRSM Encore Grades 5-6. As an educational composer Martha Mier places less emphasis on originality and more on generic authenticity (if I can put it in that rather pompous way!), which means to say the pieces she writes are distillations of typical Jazz/Blues/Rag forms. Some of them achieve a kind of perfection (like this one). After I finished studying I worked occasionally as a pub pianist in London (standing in for Sid Lucas, the former pianist of the Joe Loss orchestra, who had broken some fingers after falling downstairs) and I am reminded in this piece of that tradition of pub piano playing which thrived in the post-war years. Inspired by American boogie and stride piano styles, pianists like Winifred Atwell and Russ Conway had considerable success playing music of this kind. I loved it!
