This video explores some simple ways to implement bike bling and personalize your bicycle. We'll cover handlebar wrap and other customization options to make your bike unique, also covering what to consider beyond just aesthetics. Consider the following BUT check that the manufacturer reputation and quality of their products. 1. Skewers: Make sure that bright are of good quality from makers such as Promax which are cold forged but relatively light. Although inexpensive bright colored skewers are available on Ebay and Aliexpress, many of these are cheap alloy and I have noted either creaking, tendency loosen with time, and are soft enough to become easily stripped 2. Headset spacers: If you're a weight wienie, you'll go for carbon spacers. But for something bright, most bright alloy spacers will stand up under the strain of rugged roads and trails. 3. Bright cable housing: Most quality bright colored quality housing is available from Jagwire, Shimano, Sunlite, and a few others. Check that the housing is specific for your needs in terms of shift, brake or compressionless housing. Some manufacturers have PTFE lined housing which some claim to have lower friction and therefore better shifting / braking. This is subjective and personal. 4. Handlebar tape and bar ends: Easiest way to brighten up your bike. But appearance is not the only factor to consider. The type, thickness, texture and breath-ability of vary according to the type of terrain and personal preference. 5. Water Bottle Cages: I, personally, prefer light weight titanium cages which hold up well but brightly colored alloy is also available. Both can be slightly compressed to hold your water bottle in rough terrain as opposed to plastic. Remember to take care not to over tighten the fastening bolts which can be easily stripped! However, many bright bolts, components, and parts are made of an alloy composition that are softer than steel. They are also advertised as ultra-light. But alloy wears quickly and threads / bolt heads can be easily stripped. I, personally, stay away from: 1. Cassettes: Light flashy alloy cassettes certainly brighten up your drivetrain but wear quickly as compared to steel. You'll need to check the cassette frequently and replace as needed - before chain wear and poor shifting become an issue. Ideal for "weight wienies" and those that want to be flashy but not worth it the budget minded or where drivetrain component wear is a concern. 2. Chainring Bolts: Alloy chainring bolts come in a variety of colors. But the alloy can easily become stripped as you torque or remove the bolts presenting you with a loose or worn chainring which becomes a problem in tightening or replacing. Not worth it. 3. Stem, Handlebar, and other Fixing Bolts and Fasteners: Many bolts are critical to a stable and safe bicycle. Alloy is not the way to go. How 'bout colored titanium? Light, strong, available in variety of colors. But expensive and may not be worth the bling cost. 4. Pulley Wheels: Inexpensive, colorful and oversized pulley wheels are available but proceed with caution as shown in our video in the upper right. Many are not tightly sealed allowing dirt to get into the bearings and do not fit properly. It's also been shown that the savings is only 2 to 5 watts - not enough to be noticed. Also, because some cheap alloy pulley wheels seem to spin easier than manufacturer's composite pulley wheels do NOT mean that they'll work better under the heavy load of the chain and drive chain! The company "Ceramic Speed" offers some quality pulley wheels, but at a hefty price. 5. Chain: I have used quality gold KMC chains and noted little difference from those of Shimano and SRAM. However, some claim that such replacement chains are noisier than those recommended by your drivetrain's manufacturer (see link). You get what you buy with a cheap no-brand manufacturer which could get you stuck out on the road. Want to add some flair to your ride?
