RUN STATS: Run Name: The Needle & Needle Alternate Area Name: Cornice Bowl Location: Squaw Valley/Palisades Tahoe Rating: Unmarked My Personal Rating Opinion: ♦♦ (Double Black) Lift Taken: Headwall Express Maximum Pitch: 43 degrees Run Type: Chute/Couloir Total Run Length: 0.2 mi. Total Vertical Drop: 350 ft. Run Aspect: North SNOW CONDITIONS: Corn & Slush DATE OF RECORDING: Needle: May 18, 2024 Needle Alternate: May 19, 2024 DESCRIPTION: The Needle is part of the trio of infamous chutes in between Cornice Bowl and the Horse Trails zone. These 3 chutes are Classic, Hourglass, and Needle. There are other chutes in this area, but these 3 are the most prominent. Classic and Hourglass are marked on the trail map, Needle is not and is just beyond Hourglass. Of the 3, Hourglass is the easiest, Classic is the most aesthetic (and most fun in my opinion) and Needle is the steepest and narrowest. I've now done all 3 chutes in this legendary zone (have posted a Classic video, don't really feel the need to post an Hourglass video) and while I found Classic to be my overall favorite, Needle is the one that really tested my jump-turns. It's a little hard to find Needle from the ridge but if you pass Hourglass, you'll know that you're in the right area. The start of Needle was by far the narrowest. While I didn't find this run to be the steepest in the world, this is among the most narrow runs I've skied thus far. In these conditions, the smartest idea would have been to straightline the full thing but that's something I'm not 100% comfortable with doing yet. Luckily, past the initial choke, the run opened up significantly and I was able to start linking my turns. There was a small mandatory straightline at the end, but it wasn't bad at all. I also did a chute right next to Needle that I believe is part of the Tree Chutes zone, but I could be wrong. I decided to dub it Needle Alternate. On the first day (not shown in this video) I had to side-slip into the chute. On the second day, I worked up the courage to straightline this corridor and it honestly wasn't nearly as bad as I'd expected it to be. I really love this part of the mountain and with these 3 chutes, Headwall has quickly become, hands down, my favorite lift and terrain pod on the mountain (although, keep in mind I still haven't had the privilege of skiing KT-22!). This run definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, but tackling in a group made it feel a lot less intimidating than it probably was. Needle, in these conditions at least, ranks among my most challenging runs I've done till date, although, I have no doubt in my mind that we'll top it with various lines at the same resort! I hope to return to Needle sometime in the 2025 ski season to get proper winter footage of it and hopefully ski it with a bit more confidence than I did in this video!
