Checking out some Handball History and visiting the location of the 12 handball courts at Sportland. TWELVE! In Jersey! In 1960 Hurricane Donna flooded the New Jersey shoreline leading to the permanent closure of the popular beach resort, Sportland in Cliffwood Beach, NJ. It was a tremendous loss for New Jersey and the region of shoreline along Raritan Bay would fall on hard times, but it was also a great loss for the sport of Handball. Sportland included 12 courts for playing handball alongside other sports like tennis, swimming, diving or you could just stroll along the Boardwalk or enjoy a meal with your family. 58 years later and the handball courts were never rebuilt, all that is left of the ruins are some chunks of concrete along the shoreline. The area is beginning to see revitalization efforts with the creation of Veteran's Memorial Park with the old Sportland property. They have improved the park by providing basketball and built a new sprayground activity area for kids. Hopefully handball will one day return to the shores of Raritan Bay, this was once a beautiful gem that attracted tourism from around the region - and it could be again. By visiting these places we can gain perspective on our sport and it's history, hopefully as motivation to bring Handball back from the ruins.
