The current church is built from Accrington brick and Runcorn red sandstone. It has a large basement, a 40-foot chancel, and a tower that is 78 feet tall. The church also features stained glass and fittings designed by Sir Charles Archibald Nicholson. The history of St Thomas Church includes the construction of two churches on the same site and the naming of a primary school after the church: 1840: The original church was consecrated. 1885: Fundraising for a new church began with small weekly donations. 1902: The foundation stone for the new church was laid on May 31, 1902. 1903: The chancel and two bays of the nave opened on October 31, 1903. 1910: The new church was dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Manchester on October 12, 1910. 1982: The Butts C.E. School and Bedford C.E. School were amalgamated and renamed Leigh St. Thomas Church of England Primary School. Early 20th century: The new church replaced the original church on the same site.
