Opportunists who would utilise and pervert anti-colonialist and anti-Western ideology for their own personal gain. Many anti-colonial African leaders thus adopted Marxism and socialism. But, for many, this ideology was nothing more than a mask. A mask used and abused for the pursuit of power; the winning of popular support; the settling of personal scores; and the systematic abuse of rival ethnic and tribal groups. Those that styled themselves revolutionaries in Africa - who aligned themselves with Marxism and the East - often became the tyrants they had hoped to crush and ruled with exceptional brutality.
