I wasn't sure how to end this one. –––––––––––––––––– I kept thinking about mirrors—how we spend so much of our lives looking at reflections instead of faces. How easy it is to mistake performance for presence. How long it can take to realize you've been standing next to someone you've never actually seen. This story sat with me for weeks before I could write it. I knew it was about twins, but it wasn't really about that at all. It was about the moment you realize that beauty, manners, all the things we're taught to value—they can exist completely separate from kindness. From soul. And how painful it is when you've built a life on the wrong foundation and finally understand what's missing. I struggled most with Edmund. I didn't want him to be cruel or blind, just... asleep. The way so many of us are when we're doing what we're supposed to do instead of what's true. And Rose—I wanted her to be quiet, not weak. To have dignity that didn't need to announce itself. The kind of strength that comes from having nothing left to prove. There's something about women who've lived long enough to know the difference between what glitters and what sustains. Who understand that sometimes the cruelest betrayals come from the people who share your blood, your face, your history. I don't know if I captured that, but I tried. I suppose this is a story for anyone who's ever felt invisible. Or who married the wrong person for the right reasons. Or who's learning, late in life, that being enough doesn't require anyone else's permission. I wonder sometimes if we recognize love when it's quiet. When it doesn't announce itself with grand gestures but just... shows up. Sees you. Waits. Maybe that's what I was trying to write about all along. –––––––––––––––––– Thank you for listening. For sitting with these characters in the fog and the silence. For understanding that some stories don't tie up neatly, they just... open a door.
