St George's University of London, UK KEYWORDS: Incontinence, Stress Urinary Incontinence, Outcomes Research Methods, Female, Questionnaire The controversy surrounding mesh, including that used in stress urinary incontinence (SUI) surgery, has shone a spotlight on the need for robust evidence of treatment safety and efficacy. Heterogeneity in clinical trials evaluating surgical treatments of SUI has been reported (1) and importantly, variation in reported outcomes and outcome measures utilised impedes synthesis of data and limits quality of research conclusions. Urinary incontinence is an important condition that affects 27.6 % of women worldwide (2) and significantly impacts quality of life. There is substantial economic burden with SUI treatment costing the National Health Service in the UK £117million/year (3). Given the nature of the condition and disease burden with regards to quality of life, patient reported outcomes and how we measure these outcomes using patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) should arguably have a key focus in research trials. No consensus currently exists regarding the use of PROMs in research trials evaluating SUI surgery. As part of the first step in developing a core outcome measure set (COMS), a consensus-based set of outcome measures recommended for use in research trials, we aimed to systematically review RCTs evaluating surgical procedures for stress urinary incontinence, extract patient reported outcome measures used and create a comprehensive, structured inventory.
