"It Is Well With My Soul" is a beautiful old hymn written in 1876 by Horatio Spafford. (Disclaimer: It might be about Jesus... Proceed at your own risk!) The hymn was written after he experienced great loss on more than one occasion... The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and economic downturn in 1873 destroyed pretty much everything he had built... He had been a successful lawyer and property investor in Chicago at the time of the fire. Following that, he had planned a trip to England with his wife and four daughters but had to send them ahead as he remained behind to deal with pressing business issues. The ship his family was on, the SS Ville du Havre, sunk in an Atlantic Ocean collision with another vessel. Of his family, only his wife survived. When he made his way to England, the ship captain pointed out the area where his daughters had perished and it was there that he wrote this song, which was originally titled Ville du Havre, named after the sunken ship that took his family down with it.
