The accused, Abhishek Ghosi, was arrested in Madhya Pradesh and charged with murder: The murder- On the night of July 23, 2023, Ghosi entered the PG building and killed Kumari in the third-floor corridor. He was able to enter because the entrance gate was left open and no security guard was present. The investigation- Police arrested Ghosi on July 26, 2023 in Madhya Pradesh. The police investigation revealed that Ghosi had developed a hatred for Kumari, believing she was responsible for his breakup with his live-in partner. The chargesheet- The police filed a 1,205-page chargesheet against Ghosi on August 31, 2023. The chargesheet included 85 witness statements, including from Kumari's PG mates, an autorickshaw driver, and the owner of the house where Ghosi and his live-in partner once lived. The security lapses- The PG and building owners were booked for negligence due to security lapses that allowed Ghosi to enter the premises.
