This recording project was an experiment in "tableau vivant" staging, inspired by Josef Danhauser's famous painting "Liszt at the Piano." The staging, portrait of George Sand (prolific literary figure and friend of Liszt), and fashion is meant to evoke the atmospheres of nineteenth-century performing spaces such as the salon depicted by Danhauser, its twilight improvisations, shadowy undertones, and effusive outpourings; the gothic imagery nods to Liszt's own inspiration for this piece, which consisted of visits to prisons and graveyards in Paris during his brilliant youth. Location: Barnes Hall, Cornell University, with extra staging improvised by pianist. Performance, recording & video set up, video editing, staging, full moon footage (end scene), and idea: Theodora Serbanescu-Martin. Recorded in Ithaca, NY in October 2021. Audio engineering & lessons: Bruno Henrique Neves, to whom I am always grateful. Happy birthday, Liszt!
