Various of men packing roses to send to the United States STORYLINE: Workers at a flower-export business in Tocancipa, 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of Bogota, cut and pack flowers that on Thursday will be Valentine's Day presents across the United States. Demand for flowers peaks ahead of Valentine's Day and workers at Flores La Mana start cutting the 10 to 13 week-old rose buds from early in the morning. "Saint Valentine's in the United States is still one of the dates that demands more flowers and approximately 30 percent of the whole flower production in the year is destined for that date," said Jose Figueroa, the head of La Mana. "The rest of the flowers are distributed during the year for other kind of special dates in Europe and in the American market such as Mother's Day," Figueroa added. The cut buds are then packed. In Flores La Mana's warehouse more than one hundred workers are employed to package the flowers for export. The cut-flower industry has flourished in Colombia and the country is now the world's second biggest exporter of flowers. Colombian roses and other flowers such as carnations and chrysanthemums travel all over the world. Colombia dominates the US market and will export hundreds of thousands of bouquets of flowers to the US for Valentine's Day. In the days before February 14, between 20 and 25 cargo planes leave Colombia every day taking flowers to the US. The United Kingdom and Russia are also important destinations.
