A solo hike up the Old Man of Storr on the Isle of Skye, one of Scotland's most iconic places. The Old Man of Storr as part of the Trotternish Ridge was created by a massive ancient landside, leaving one of the most photographed landscapes in the world. Famous for its maginficent scenery and views, the Old Man of Storr is a popular hotspot for tourists, hikers, hill walkers and photographers alike. The Storr, which refers to the group of looming outcrops that include and surround the Old Man, is a title derived from the Norse word for “Great Man.” Legend has it that the Old Man of Storr was a giant who resided on the Trotternish Ridge. When he was laid to rest upon his death, his thumb, the “Old Man”, remained partially above ground. A scientific version of events is that The Old Man of Storr is a remnant of the volcanic activity that forged the Isle of Skye around 2,800 million years ago. The 55m tall rock column is actually a volcanic plug, a volcanic plug being formed when magma within a volcanic vent cools and sets. The Old Man of Storr has also appeared in several movies, including the beginning of The Wicker Man (1973) and the opening scenes of Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus(2012). The walk starts out from the Old Man of Storr car park which is about a 7 mile drive from Portree. The cost of parking is £3 for 3 hours at the time of writing. The car park and thus the walk can get very busy at peak times. At the car park there is also public toilets available. The walk itself is about 5km and about 90 minutes of time in total with ample stopping time for photos etc. The path is easy to follow and takes you up to an outcropping, marked on the map as Storr viewpoint, which gives you fabulous views over to the Old Man of Storr. From here you can also see the Sound of Raasay with the islands of Raasay and Rona and beyond below. There are also numerous other paths to explore to get different aspect views of The Storr and the Old Man. Once you have explored the areas you want it's then return to the car park via the path you started on. #hiking #solohiking #isleofskye #scotland #subscribe #visitscotland If you enjoyed watching this video please click the like 👍 , let me know in the comments below ✍️ and consider subscribing 🔔 , it would be very much appreciated.
