During the Tudor Period and the reign of King Henry VIII, the Tower of London became known as a site of execution and torture. Henry VIII even ordered the executions of two of his own wives, and both of these were executed inside the walls of the Tower of London on Tower Green. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard's executions were incredibly shocking, and to execute two Queens of England showed how Henry would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. But during his reign, there were more women who were ordered inside the walls of the Tower of London. Henry targeted also Margaret Pole, the Countess of Salisbury and had her beheaded by a blundering axeman as he was worried about her claim to the throne. Jane Boleyn, the sister in law of Anne was also executed in the Tower as she became embroiled in the Catherine Howard scandal. But one final woman executed during the Tudor Period inside the Tower was Lady Jane Grey, the 9 Day Queen who Mary I killed as she was too much of a threat. The Tower of London is seen as a centre of brutality because of these deaths and killings. But despite this, there were only a few people killed inside the Tower's walls, and to be executed in private there was considered a privilege reserved for the royalty and the nobility.
