On August 1, 2024 around 7:25 PM, multiple police agencies were notified of a hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist on the Highlands-Sea Bright Bridge. Patrolman Davi Cunha with the Atlantic Highlands PD first arrived on scene, while Patrolwoman Nicole Curley and Sergeant Kevin O’Donnell with the Highlands PD arrived on scene shortly afterwards. Patrolwoman Alexa Susino and Patrolman Kevin Pennell with the Sea Bright PD then arrived on scene, and it was determined that based on the location, Sea Bright would have jurisdiction. Patrolwoman Susino noticed that a 73-year-old bicyclist was lying down on the road. His Spartacus Trek bicycle was split into pieces. The driver side mirror of the vehicle that allegedly struck the bicyclist was on the road as well, so officers in the area were instructed to look for a vehicle with a missing driver side mirror. It was apparent that the bicyclist had sustained physical injuries, but he was conscious and speaking. Patrolwoman Susino briefly interviewed him before he was transported to the hospital. As the officers completed their investigation, Patrolman Pennell had to collect all the pieces of the bicycle. Sergeant O’Donnell told the officers that there was a camera on the Highlands side of the bridge that stored video recordings, so he was going to check it. Around 7:57 PM, Patrolman Chad Bacek with the Middletown Township PD observed a black 2021 Lexus ES3 parked in the shoulder on State Route 36 North near Appleton Avenue. He observed that the driver side mirror was missing. Since officers in nearby towns had been advised of a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident in Sea Bright, he suspected that the driver of the Lexus may be the person of interest. The driver of the Lexus was identified as Elizabeth Attanasio. When she was asked where she was coming from, she initially claimed that she was coming from her home in Old Bridge. He returned to his patrol car and advised dispatch that he may have the suspect that Sea Bright was looking for. Elizabeth continued to offer contradictory accounts of where she had been. Patrolman Edward Jennings arrived shortly afterwards, and she told him that she was coming from the Seastreak area after taking the ferry from Manhattan. He detected the odor of alcohol, and she eventually admitted to drinking wine at the Sandbox bar after initially denying it. She also claimed that her flat tire was because of her neighbor. Based on their suspicion of impairment, Elizabeth was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. Patrolman Jennings administered the Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand test, while Sergeant Michael Heaton administered the HGN test. Following the FSTs, Patrolman Bacek placed Elizabeth under arrest for DWI. At the Middletown PD, the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators was read to her at the station but she refused to submit breath samples. Around 10:37 PM, Patrolwoman Madison Taylor with Sea Bright arrived in Middletown to take custody of Elizabeth. Since she refused to voluntarily consent to a blood draw, they obtained a warrant and transported her to the hospital. Her blood was drawn at the hospital shortly after 10:55 PM. Her blood test results would later indicate a BAC level of 0.08%, and that confirmed their suspicion that she was well over the legal limit at the time of the crash. Following the blood draw, Elizabeth was transported to the Sea Bright PD. After they completed their paperwork, she was issued traffic citations from both Sea Bright and Middletown and released pending her court appearance. On September 7, 2024, she was informed that she was being criminally charged with Assault by Auto (2C:12-1C(2)) as well because her BAC was over the legal limit. She was photographed, fingerprinted, and released with a summons once again. As of August 23, 2025, court records indicate that Elizabeth’s charge of Assault by Auto is still pending in the Monmouth County Superior Court. ------------------------------------------ Please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE.
