The Sealion 5 DM-i from BYD has launched! We were invited to attend it’s unveiling, and get a closer look at this new hybrid. On paper it’s a plug-in hybrid, but out on the road it behaves far more like an electric car – smooth, quiet and easy to live with – just with the added flexibility of filling up at a petrol station when you need to. That’s a big win if you don’t have off-street parking or don’t want to rely solely on public charging. BYD has focused on smooth, efficient performance. Around town and at speed, the Sealion 5 DM-i feels effortless, with the electric motor doing most of the work. The petrol engine steps in quietly when needed, acting as a generator once the battery is depleted. With around 40 miles of electric range on the standard model and over 50 miles on the Design trim, many drivers could complete daily journeys without using any fuel at all. And for longer trips, a full battery and tank deliver a combined range of well over 600 miles. Equipment levels are strong for the money, with vegan leather upholstery, LED lighting, metallic paint and 18-inch alloys all coming as standard. Step up to the Design trim and you gain heated seats, a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging and a powered tailgate – all welcome upgrades. BYD’s tech offering is comprehensive, with digital displays, app connectivity and phone-as-a-key functionality, while retaining some physical buttons for key controls, which is refreshing.
