The system as a whole started as a limestone quarry as early as 1244. The floor area of the complex is estimated to be around 200,000 m2 ; and the combined length of the tunnels totals about 22 miles ! Underground quarrying activity in Kobanya increased significantly in the early 17th century, the height of the limestone output was in the 19th century, during which period limestone was provided for the building of some of the most prominent buildings in present-day Budapest Even when the quarry was still in active production of limestone during the 17th century , the large wine makers established above it started to purpose build Kobanya’s abandoned sections and use them as wine cellars When the Grape phylloxera insect pest was introduced to Europe from North America in the 1850’s It devastated the grape industry, causing winemaking to ceasedin Hungary , during that time beer breweries began to settled in the area of Kobanya to exploit the mine and its resources Péter Schmiedt was the first to establish his Kőbánya Beer House on the premises in 1844.The company continued to use some of the underground spaces as fermentation cellars, drilling wells to exploit the limestone-filtered, clean groundwater under the quarry tunnels for beer production. The Austrian businessman and brewer Sr. Anton Dreher bought Schmiedt's company and its related assets in 1862 to eliminate competition and to expand his Austrian brewery company, Klein-Schwechat Brewing House , Mr Drehen continued to use portions of the underground spaces as cellars. led by Dreher's youngest grandson, Eugene ,the family's company became the most significant developer and producer of pale lager up until World War I. In the 1920s,the brewery controlled 70% of the beer market in Hungary. During the Second World War, due to fears of Allied bombing campaigns, parts of the complex were used as a secret aircraft engine assembly plant by the enterprise responsible for the domestic license production of heavy fighters for the Luftwaffe: the Danubian Aircraft Factory. Throughout the war, especially during the siege of Budapest in 1944, the complex also acted as a shelter for civilians Credits to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C5%91...
