The Anglo- Saxon heritage in these mountains is noted for its personal form of family group singing tradition, which by instinct retains much of its homemade flavor. The mountains of Southeastern Kentucky are no exception; it was here that A. L. and Kathleen Helton Phipps were quite naturally destined to carry on this tradition. Both were reared with strict guidance of Christian parents. A. L.’s father, a Baptist Minister, took an active part in singing at all religious gatherings, once so very popular in rural areas before the days of radio. In the late 20’s A. L. joined his father and other members of the Phipps Family (PHIPPS QUARTET) to sing at churches, conventions, and other public gatherings. It was in the mid 30’s when A. L. Phipps found himself to be a natural born musician; his favorite instrument of course was the guitar. He was inspired by the old time artists, especially the Carter Family; and it was natural for him to pick and sing the Carter Family style of music. In the same valley, was Kathleen Helton Phipps, a quite good- natured girl who had no brothers or sisters to raise a ruckus with. So, she helped her father and mother on the farm, and in her spare time joined in with her mother who sang the old style family songs. Although Kathleen owned a fiddle from early childhood days, she chose a guitar as the instrument she liked best to accompany her singing. While playing and singing on a special occasion at a neighbor’s home, it so happened that A. L. Phipps was invited to bring along his guitar and join Kathleen in this performance. Soon after this they were married and settled in the valley. It was only natural for them to develop their singing heritage and soon, through the medium of radio and other performances they got the attention of the recording companies. They were brought to their studios to record and were on their way to become national and international recording stars. The Phipps Family’s children became links in the chain of tradition; Helen, Leemon, and Bolon have thus far recorded with the Family and by this time the Phipps Family are well known to all of the English speaking nations of the world. One of America’s greatest heritages is the old time Gospel songs that have been handed down from generation to generation. This has been made possible by many country recording artists. One among this number is Carl Story; he has the ability to play and sing these songs in the original way. Carl Story who hails from the Carolina Mountains, formed a group about twenty years ago. Their name is, Carl Story and His Rambling Mountaineers. This group was noted as one of the tops on the WNOX Mid-Day Merry Go-Round. They appeared on many radio stations and TV shows. Two of the most outstanding recordings by Carl Story, “Light at the River,” and “Mighty Close to Heaven, ’ have been included in this album. It is their hope and sincere desire that these recordings will bring joy and a spiritual up-lift to all listeners. The Carter Family dates back to August 1, 1927, when A. P., Sara, and Mabelle Carter made their first recordings in their home town Bristol, Tennessee. The Carter family became one of the most out- stand recording stars throughout all the English-speaking World. They recorded many songs through the years including 1941, and at that time the Carter Family retired for about 15 years. On April 20, 1956, in Bristol, Tennessee, and in the same old brick building, there was a reunion of the Carter Family and the recording world knew them once more. This time the group included A. P. Carter. Sara, their son Joe, and daughter Jeanette. This get-together and recording session began a new series of wonderful recordings. This was their last recording session before A. P. Carter died.
