India has given the green signal to acquire 114 additional Rafale fighter jets under the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) project in January 2026. This massive defense deal is estimated at ₹3.25 lakh crore ($36-39 billion), making it one of India’s largest defense acquisitions. Under the deal, 96-100 aircraft will be manufactured in India as part of the Make in India initiative, while only 12-18 jets will be procured directly from France in ready-to-fly condition. India has also requested integration of indigenous weapons and systems into these aircraft. The proposal will now go to the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) and then for final approval to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).
