💧 Great Depression Water Pie Recipe Ingredients • 1 cup granulated sugar • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1½ cups water (filtered, bottled, or tap) • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 5 tablespoons salted butter, cut into pieces • 1 (9-inch) unbaked deep-dish pie crust Instructions • Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C). Place your unbaked pie crust on a foil-lined baking sheet to catch any spills. • Mix the dry ingredients: In a small bowl, combine sugar and flour. Stir well. This is the only mixing you’ll do for this recipe. • Add the water: Pour 1½ cups of water into the pie crust. Do not stir. • Add the sugar mixture: Sprinkle the sugar-flour mix evenly over the water in the crust. Again, no mixing! • Add vanilla: Drizzle 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract over the top. • Add butter: Place the 5 pieces of butter evenly across the surface. They’ll float on top. Bake • Bake at 400°F for 30 minutes. • Then reduce heat to 375°F and bake another 30 minutes. • If the crust browns too quickly, tent it loosely with foil halfway through. Cool and chill • Remove from oven and let the pie rest on the counter for 2 hours, then refrigerate overnight to fully set. Serve chilled • The texture should be smooth, gelatinous, and slightly buttery-sweet — almost like a vanilla custard or transparent Jell-O. Optional toppings • Whipped cream, fresh berries, or a sprinkle of cinnamon. #waterpie #greatdepressionrecipes #cooking
