Welcome to our journey into the past. Today, we explore the Guntupalli Group of Buddhist Monuments, a hidden treasure in Andhra Pradesh, India. Located near Kamavarapukota in Eluru district, this site is about forty kilometers from the town of Eluru. It is one of the most important places showing the spread of Buddhism in southern India. Here, you will find rock-cut caves, stupas, and a chaitya hall. The chaitya hall is very special. Its stone entrance was carved to look like wood, just like the famous Lomas Rishi Cave in Bihar. Inside, a stone stupa stands at the center, with a path around it for worshippers to walk in circles. On the terrace outside, more than thirty small stupas can be seen. There are also remains of brick and stone monasteries, called viharas. Most of these monuments were built between 200 BCE and the start of the Common Era. Excavations here revealed relic caskets made of gold, silver, and crystal beads, along with a bronze image of Padmapani. One casket even had an inscription from the 9th to 10th century CE. The Guntupalli monuments are not just ruins. They are a living reminder of India’s rich Buddhist heritage and art. Thanks for watching.
