The Golden Temple, known as Hiranyavarna Mahavihara in Kwa Bahal, is a prominent Buddhist landmark in Patan, its origins intertwined with a captivating tale of devotion and divine guidance. Queen Pingala, renowned for her unwavering devotion, journeyed to Kathmandu Valley carrying the image of Sakyamuni Buddha after being neglected by her husband, the king. She founded Pingala Vihar in Kathmandu, where she observed a rigorous month-long fast, leading to a miraculous encounter with the king. Centuries later, a Tantric priest rediscovered the Buddha image, leading to a series of events that eventually saw the image relocated to Patan. Following divine instruction, the king of Patan established the Golden Temple, where the Buddha image found its rightful place, symbolizing the enduring devotion and divine guidance in Newari heritage.
