A few days after the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee called for a review of the United States’ relationship with Uganda—following remarks by Muhoozi accusing the U.S. of undermining Uganda’s security and suggesting that he had crossed a diplomatic red line—the European Parliament also issued a strong condemnation of the Ugandan government. The Parliament denounced what it described as continued lawlessness, human rights violations, and a culture of impunity. Several Members of the European Parliament characterized the recently concluded election as a sham, describing it as a military-style operation aimed at targeting opposition leader Bobi Wine, during which numerous lives were lost. In response, supporters of President Museveni—who have often highlighted Uganda’s longstanding foreign aid partnerships with Western nations—have expressed strong objections to the European Parliament’s stance. While these developments may not, in themselves, signal an immediate turning point for those anticipating political change in Uganda, they suggest growing international scrutiny and mounting pressure on the regime.
