Defensible space works. When wildfire broke out in Taylor Park, over 100 people evacuated from AEI Base Camp, campsites and homes near Illinois Creek. The fire burned hot, but was stopped at 5 acres. How? In part because the Colorado State Forest Service thinned and removed fuels around homes in 2019, creating space for firefighters to stage an attack and protect homes. Responders credited defensible space for the fire not spreading faster. CSFS foresters and partners will continue work here through 2028 with the Good Neighbor Authority Illinois Creek Stewardship project. This is forestry in action.
