When Visuals Can’t Save a Horror Film: Dissecting November (2017)

This video is a tad different from my usual reviews. I watched the Estonian folk horror movie November from 2017. The movie inspired me to make this video, as I find it a perfect example of a film with a lot of good ideas and a great art direction, but which is ultimately quite a disappointing watch. The film does not manage to combine its good elements with an enthralling story. It completely fails to string its story elements, and scenes, together in a way that shapes a coherent and engaging narrative. What you instead get is what feels like a bland love story interrupted by sketches and short, unsettling horror and drama moments. This results in a movie that is 80% utterly uninteresting and then has maybe 20 minutes of interesting concepts, creations and gimmicks disrupting the main storyline and overall pace of the film. And I am left wildly intrigued by some of what the movie has to offer, but ultimately feel completely let down and saddened that they didn't succeed in making a more entertaining movie. Or a deeper movie. Or indeed simply a movie with more than an eggshell of ingenuity covering a yolk of mediocrity. As such, it is a great example of a film where art outshines, or even contradicts, the plot. The narrative is killed by the artist's creative attempt.
