He is known as the 'father of post-independence Indian-English verse'. He was a prolific poet, playwright, art critic and social commentator. Educated in Mumbai and London, his first collection of poems was published in 1952. He worked as an advertising copywriter of a picture frame company. Later, he was the art critic for The Times of India and editor of The Poetry India.
