I solved the mystery of Meshuggah's "Combustion" of how to hear the "real" pulse of the song! I rearranged the drums and made a drumcover so everybody can hear easily how the pulse was meant to be! Song "Combustion" by Meshuggah (I do not own the rights of this song. I just had fun playing to it and showing you my discovery!) Drumcover by Marc Friedrich Video by Marc Friedrich I always loved „Combustion“ by Meshuggah, rhythmically it seemed to be more simple than their other songs. The drums where pretty straight forward with this repeating skanky downbeat thing and there was this weird riff always confusing on its breakdown. But something I couldn’t understand: why did Thomas Haake (the drummer btw) count us in with the Hi Hat somewhere in between? I thought, it’s maybe on purpose to count in a 16th note shifted just to be prog. But why the hell would he do that? The whole song sounded good, shifted once to the halftime feel and the rest to this fast skank downbeat. I couldn’t get it and tried to understand his count in and hear it like his version. First it seemed impossible, my ear couldn’t hold the shifted pulse. But then I played the drums with it to better keep the time and played a simpler groove more connected to the 4/4 pulse. And it worked! I had to do it many times to get used to it, but with the help of a new beat and its clearer pulse I could hear the song how the pulse was meant to be! Haakes counts made now total sense. There was never an odd time signature in the song anymore and the transitions to the halftime part fitted perfectly. The crazy thing about it, it was a totally different experience, the song sounded brand-new to me! All those riffs sounded crazier than I thought! There was this missing prog part. And yes to explain to you: all notes of the beginning riff (and the following) are on the 16th offs (all „e“ and „a“ of 1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e+a). All the kicks with the whole band and Jens vocals are accenting just those notes! There is never an actual note on 1. We all (or maybe most of us) heard those accented notes on the downbeats. Finally I had solved this mystery. And because I’ve seen some attempts to explain the real pulse of the song with confusing metronom clicks I rearranged the drums and jammed it in my way so you can hear how the pulse was meant to be. I promise you with this version you’ll hear it right. ;) PS: I do not own this song and I love Haakes parts, i respect the original. It created this illusion of another pulse. This must not say that it’s wrong to hear it the other way. But it’s an amazing illusion and this is proof, that music can be heard differently. Now enjoy my version, and the „original“ pulse, if you haven’t heard it yet and tell me what you think!
