Welcome to LANCASHIRE!!! To kick off things in the North West of England, we have today a small village in the East of Lancashire. It is the only parish in the Borough – the remainder is an unparished area – of Hyndburn. The village is located in the North East corner of the parish on the River Calder, and in the South West is a suburb of Accrington. Industry in this part of Lancashire looks different now, but this place been associated with a few things. Coal mining is one, but in 1887 bricks started to be produced. These were known as Nori’s, and there’s a backstory to that. Due to the type of iron-hard engineering brick that was produced, the word IRON was written on the chimney of the brickworks However the letters of the word IRON were accidentally was placed backwards in the brick moulds which of course spelt NORI and thus Nori bricks were born. Nori bricks played an important part in the building industry all around the world. Blackpool tower’s foundation stone was a NORI brick. Five Million Nori Bricks in all make up the building. Another major build where Nori Bricks were used was The Empire State Building in New York City. After the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was opened in the 1810s, the local pits were sunk near it for transportation. They supplied coal to the industries of East Lancashire. There are a couple of memorials here for the explosion at the Moorfield Colliery in 1883 which resulted in the deaths of 68 people. A list of those who lost their lives can be found on a special memorial in front of the original colliery, giving the ages of the victims too. Many of us know the Milk Marketing Board's popular television advert that featured the slogan “Accrington Stanley, Who Are They?” In this episode, we’ll see the club in question, as their ground falls within ALTHAM. **** My name is Andy.
