Hello everyone, I'm Kohsen Handa from the Noosology Research Institute at Musashino Gakuin University. In this second research video, I delve into the philosophical significance of "Noos" (Nous), often translated as "divine intelligence" or "active intelligence," and its connection to Plato, Aristotle, and Heidegger. Plato’s philosophy, particularly his Theory of Ideas, introduced a dualistic worldview—separating the realm of sensory perception from the eternal realm of Forms. His famous Allegory of the Cave illustrates this, portraying ordinary people as prisoners who mistake shadows for reality, until a philosopher (the liberator) leads them to true knowledge. Noos, in this framework, represents the intellect that perceives the higher world of Ideas. However, Aristotle challenged this dualism, emphasizing the empirical world and criticizing Plato’s Ideas as vague and impractical. This foundational divide between idealism and realism would shape the course of Western thought. Heidegger, on the other hand, sought to transcend this Platonic-Aristotelian opposition by returning to the Greek concept of physis (nature). He argued that Western philosophy had been fixated on beings (Seiendes) rather than the fundamental Being (Sein) that allows things to exist. His existential analysis led him to critique modern nihilism, but his emphasis on communal identity and the state took his philosophy in an authoritarian direction. This discussion ultimately raises the question: If Noos represents a form of intelligence that orders chaos, could it provide an alternative perspective beyond the philosophical limitations set by Plato, Aristotle, and Heidegger? Noosology seeks to explore this possibility, offering a transcendence beyond traditional Western metaphysics.
