The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past – Black Mist ("Restored" CD version)

The Black Mist theme from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, restored to CD quality using the original hardware sampler and sound module. You might know the official soundtrack CD from the game (called "Sound and Drama"), which had arrangements of the game soundtrack. However, this track here is different: it is not an arrangement, it's the original in-game track recorded with the original instruments, without any compression. The strings and trumpet are from an S-550 and were processed with a KORG A1 to add a bit of hall reverb, the other brass instrument is from a Proteus/2. In addition to the strings and brass, this track also uses two percussion samples from a sample CD (in audio CD format) called "Sampler Library", which I loaded into Kontakt for simplicity reasons, mainly because it's a generic audio CD and not made for any specific sampler. The original track has three trumpet channels in the beginning, but then it is reduced to two channels, almost certainly due to polyphony limitations on the SNES. I recreated this "removed" channel using the information from the first few seconds, to give it a slightly more interesting sound. A version without this modification is linked below. In addition, the timpani was processed with a pitch shifter to add a second copy at a lower octave, to make it sound bigger and more powerful. I hope you enjoy the result.
