A quick glance at my calendar of holy days reminds me that many of us are solemnly preparing our hearts and homes for Friday's annual Feast of Waylon Jennings, who passed away on February 13, 2002. I grabbed a guitar last night and headed down to the basement to record one of my favorite Waylon tunes -- one he co-wrote with Texas disc jockey Don Bowman in 1963 and first recorded the next year (about a month after I was born). Waylon re-recorded the song a few times after that, including a duet version with Willie Nelson that topped the country charts when I was in college. I always preferred the original recording, which is short, stripped-down, and to the point. St. Waylon of Littlefield, pray for us.
