We went on a one-day trekking trip from Kraków to Gorczański National Park, which is about a 1 hour 30-minute drive from the city. The park is known for its beautiful landscapes, dense forests, and stunning panoramic views of the Tatra Mountains. At the top of the hill, there are two open shelters where you can stay overnight and cook your own meals. These shelters offer a rustic experience, as there is no electricity or modern heating. The only source of warmth is a traditional chimney, so it’s essential to bring high-quality sleeping bags and heated clothing, especially during colder months. If you plan to use the chimney, you’ll need to chop your own firewood, adding to the adventure. Since these shelters are shared spaces, it’s important to keep them clean for the next visitors. Wash any utensils you use, dispose of waste properly, and avoid leaving food scraps that could attract animals. If possible, consider leaving behind something useful—like dry firewood, matches, or basic supplies—to help future travellers who might arrive in tough conditions. This experience is perfect for those who enjoy off-grid living, self-sufficiency, and a deeper connection with nature.
