Donner Reed Party - Excerpt from The Story of US

This is a clip for educational purposes under Fair Use regarding the journey of the Donner-Reed Party in 1846. Note: While not shown in this video, the true reason they were so late heading into the Sierra Nevadas is because of all the time they spent in the Wasatch Mountains building a road thru Emigration Canyon, which descends into the Salt Lake Valley. It took them 18 days to travel 40 miles; much slower than normal; a loss of about 2 weeks of time that they could ill-afford. While the Latter-Day Saint / Mormon Pioneers (who would use the road the next year, and for several decades afterwards) would be grateful for their efforts in building the road, it would do little to save the Donner-Reed party in 1846. It is originally from the Nutopia / History.com documentary The Story of Us, narrated by Liev Schreiber.
