Hertz Orders 100,000 Tesla Electric Vehicles: The Largest Tesla Order Ever | NEXT Travel Stream

Hertz may be the travel comeback story of the year. The rental car giant filed for bankruptcy last May but announced a series of ground-breaking deals in the past week. First, Hertz announced it would purchase 100,000 ‪@tesla‬ electric vehicles by the end of next year. To power that fleet, the company will also build an EV charging infrastructure across its global operations. And to spread the word about its leadership on EV rentals, Hertz is partnering with seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady for a new "Hertz, Let's Go!" campaign. It’s an aggressive move to put Hertz at the center of the electric mobility evolution. The massive Tesla order will make Hertz the largest provider of electric vehicle rentals in the US. Following the announcement of the Tesla purchase, Hertz announced that the company would make 50,000 of those Tesla’s available to Uber drivers. That should help Uber meet its goal to be fully electric by 2030. Uber drivers can rent a Tesla Model 3 from Hertz for about $300 a week, including maintenance and insurance. That’s too expensive for a typical driver, but the companies seem to be expecting a government subsidy to bridge the gap. We’ll see. This past month, Hertz announced that ex-Ford CEO, Mark Fields, would serve as their interim chief executive. He certainly hasn’t wasted any time. In a recent CNBC interview Fields stated “we are going to become expert at managing large electrified fleets well before our competition. And as you look down the road to autonomous vehicles we will solidify our position as the central component of the mobility ecosystem.
