The Northern Light Hiroshi Hase had a great run in New Japan, where he became well known for his Jr. Heavyweight run as well as his tag teams with Sasaki and Keiji Mutoh. He was involved in two matches of the year, in 1991 and in 2001 (rated by WON and Nikkan Sports, respectively). Hase was an Olympic level wrestler, competing in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling where he placed 9th. These skills reflect in his style, which is very suplex and submission orianted. He was a very very technical wrestler, as he knew many different holds and techniques. His previous knowledge in wrestling for sure helped him there. After his successful run in NJPW, he moved to AJPW in the late 90s and he became successful there as well. As you can see in this video, he faced many of the top names in All Japan, from Misawa and Kobashi to Kawada and Akiyama. Hase was always praised for his technical skills and his ability in the ring, which is why most people find it strange that he never held any major titles. Outside of the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title, he never held any significant gold in Japan. His biggest achievement was winning the short-lived WCW International title, which was impressive but that reign didn't last that long. Despite his lack of titles, he was remembered and well liked by many fans and his match against the Steiners in 1991 is still talked about to this day 30+ years later. He is without a doubt one of the most underrated wrestlers in modern Japanese wrestling scene. And he is also known for his run in politics, becoming the governor of Ishikawa Prefecture where he was a teacher. Though a disclaimer here is necessary (**), this video isn't about endorsing or criticising him as a politician and/or his position in the government, it's not my field of expertise so I will not get involved in it. This is just a video highlighting his career in AJPW. #prowrestling #wrestling #alljapanprowrestling #ajpw #suplex #ishikawa #njpw #puroresu
