A UK farmer calls for loss and damage funds to recoup damage from the climate crisis, having seen severe floods waterlog his crops and seed doubts about the future security of British food. Colin is a fourth-generation farmer who hopes to pass the family farm on to his own children. Since 2001, his farm, in Northern Lincolnshire in England, has “broken nearly every single weather record” for extreme temperatures and flooding. After catastrophic flooding in the winter of 2023-4, Colin had a heart attack he believes was caused by the stress of the experience. As the climate crisis intensifies, so does the damage to the livelihoods and lives of farmers around the world – with frightening implications for food security. Oil, gas, and coal are responsible for nearly 90% of carbon dioxide emissions, which are cooking the planet and super-charging extreme weather events like those experienced with increasing frequency by Colin. The loss and damage fund was created to help poorer nations hit hardest by climate breakdown. But the current $702 million pledged is just a drop in the ocean. Fossil fuel companies rake in billions. They must pay into the fund to help rebuild, protect, and pay for some of the damage they've caused. “I think we can make a difference,” says Colin; “but we need to do it fast, and we need to do it soon”.
