This time our visit was to Itanagar - the capital of Arunachal, and the beautiful, picturesque Ziro Valley. We went to Arunachal from Kolkata directly by flight. It takes hardly 1.5 hrs to land at the newly started Donyi Polo airport near Itanagar, from Kolkata. Itanagar town, located in the foothill of Himalaya, at an altitude of 2460ft, is 34 km from the airport. In Itanagar we visited Ita Fort and the beautiful Buddhist Gompha Temple on the two Hillocks. Ita fort is a medieval fort, made of Bricks. But teh fort now is in complete ruins and very little is left, apart from few old brick walls. However, the environment of the place and the breath taking view from top is awesome. Ziro is around 100 km from from Itanagar. When we started to climb the mountains in car the day light went off. A journey in the Himalayan mountains on a moonlit evening was quite an experience to remember. Ziro is located in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal. Before reaching to Ziro the view of River Subansiri, we got from a road side restaurant, was fantastic. When we reached Ziro, it was late evening, and the mountain valley was preparing for a sleep. Our stay was at Ami Homestay, run by a local Apatani family, at Hapoli, the main town of Ziro. We tasted some local preparation at Dinner. Next morning, it was quite foggy. After around 8 am, when the fog cover gradually was removed, we got to see the beauty of Ziro first time in bright daylight. Ziro, located at an average altitude of 5700 ft, in the lap of Himalaya, is a beautiful and picturesque valley, with lots of uniqueness and varieties. Ziro is the home of Apatani Tribes of Arunachal. It comprises of Hapoli town, and a number of small tribal villages, like Biiri, Hari, Hong, Siiro, Tarin etc. The modernness is now mixed with the ethnic Tribal Culture. How to go: Nearest Rail station to Itanagar or Ziro is Naharlagun. A train reaches to Naharlagun from Guwahati in the morning after a overnight journey. Itanagar is 13 km and Ziro is 80km from Naharlagun. Direct flight is available from Kolkata to Itanagar. Flight time: Dep 12-45, Arrv at Itanagar: 14-10. Itanagar town is 34 km away from the newly built Donyi Polo Airport at Holongi. There is share car (sumo) available once or twice in thee morning from Itanagar town to Ziro. Timing at around 5-30 am and 10-30 am. Fare 550 per person. There is Arunachal State Transport bus plying from Itanagar to Ziro once or twice a day, but its timing is not regular. The care fare (sumo) is 6500 from Airport to Ziro, 5500 from Itanagar to Ziro and 4500 from Naharlagun to Ziro. Contact for Car: Tutu Tayiang - 9362979452 The Transport here in this part of Arunachal is a bit costly. The population in this part is less, but most of them are with good economic condition. Where to Stay: In Itanagar town, there are a number of Hotels of different range and standards. In Ziro we stayed at Ami Homestay at Hapoli. Tariff: Double bed room 2000 incl. Breakfast.
