We planned a two-day Ring of Kerry road trip. Then a hurricane showed up. We moved the whole trip up a day to get ahead of the weather — which meant starting with a steep hike the locals call Cardiac Hill, driving narrow roads that barely qualify as one lane, and finishing the ring in the rain the next day because we were committed to finishing the ring. The itinerary Day One: 🥾 Cardiac Hill hike at Killarney National Park — steep, slimy ropes, no trail markers, genuinely stunning views at the top. Three thumbs up. 👀 Ladies View — named because Queen Victoria's ladies in waiting loved it so much in 1861. Gift shop has been in the same family since the 1930s. Good steak sandwich. 🛍️ Moll's Gap — named after a woman who sold poitín to road workers. Good stop for shopping. 🏖️ Derrynane Beach — 10 minutes, enough time to breathe 🎩 Waterville — Charlie Chaplin brought his family here every year for over a decade. Chris did an impression. 🌊 Kerry Cliffs — the whole reason we made this trip. Not busy, extremely windy, completely speechless. One of the best things we've seen in Ireland. 🏨 Royal Valentia Hotel — four-poster bed, chandelier, ocean view from the bathtub. Open since 1833. Mushroom risotto with black truffle oil. Day Two: ☔ The hurricane arrived as rain. We drove anyway. 🍗 Mana Café & Bistro — no social media presence, just great food. Fried chicken on a brioche bun. Would drive through tiny alleyways to get back there. Good to know: Bring snacks. The roads are narrow, windy, and occasionally terrifying.
