I Hjemmet (In My Homeland) Lyric Pieces op.43 no.3 E. H. Grieg Who was Grieg? Edvard Hagerup Grieg was a Norwegian pianist and composer, who lived from 1843 to 1907. He grew up in a very musical family in the city of Bergen. His mother - a music teacher by profession - taught him to play piano from the age of six. As his talent was noticed during his teenage years he went on to study at the Leipzig conservatory. Even though Grieg suffered from lung diseases throughout his life, he was very successful in his lifetime. Today Grieg is considered to be one of the main romantic era composers. His music is rooted in Norwegian traditional folk songs, his most famous works being the Peer Gynt suite, his Lyric Pieces and the Holberg suite. About this video The music in this video is called I Hjemmet (In My Homeland) and it is part of Grieg's Lyriske småstykker (Lyric Pieces). The Lyric Pieces are a collection of short songs for piano, heavily influenced by Norwegian folk music, with titles such as To Spring, Homesickness and Wedding Day at Troldhaugen. The song In My Homeland starts with a light melancholic melody, with a second melody just below it, all supported by long ringing harmonies. What follows is a more lively part which slowly grows louder until it resolves back to the original melody. The second time it is played an octave lower, adding to the the sentimental character of the music.
