Designed after the Cherokee and produced in 1985 for model year 1986, the Jeep Comanche was expected to be a sales hit as it's cousin XJ was. However, among the dozens of compact truck options at the time, it was outsold by all of them, including the Dodge Dakota, Chevy Silverado, and Ford Ranger. These names are all commonplace nowadays, but not the Comanche. Multiple factors contributed to its downfall: the first model year's best engine choice was a 2.5L inline-4, making just over 100 horsepower. It was certainly a stout little engine, but comparatively weaker than the competition's offerings. The Comanche didn't offer much you couldn't get in one of the many other compact trucks of the time, while the Cherokee was revolutionary in being the first 4 door SUV. Because of low sales and Chrysler not wanting the MJ competing with its own Dodge Dakota, it was discontinued in 1992. Only 190,446 Comanches were ever built. Most of those survivors have rotted out to rust, been destroyed or modified with LS swaps and monster truck tires + lifts. An incredibly small amount of Stock Comanches still exist today. In my entire life, I've only ever seen one in person, and it's this one right here. This 1987 MJ is the base SporTruck trim, but features the AMC 4.0L Inline 6 with a 5 speed Peugeot BA 10/5 Transmission. It is paired with Jeep's NP231 Part Time transfer case, sending power to the rear Dana 35 Axle in 2 wheel drive and to the front Dana 30 in 4 wheel drive. It has manual windows, manual locks, no cruise control, no traction control, no Anti-lock brakes, and no airbags. I bought it with 114,860 Miles. I intend to fix and "restore" this vehicle to the best of my ability. It's one of my dream cars. I /had/ to have one.
