Taipei Veterans General Hospital uses 3D printing to treat patients with hip problems

Today we give you a heartwarming story about recovery. Twenty-year-old dancer Hsiao-cheng felt pain in her hip joints which greatly affected her mobility and life in general. In a medical examination, she was diagnosed with developmental dysplasia of the hip. But after undergoing surgery at a hospital, she is now able to dance and live her life normally. FTV reporter Stephany Yang met Hsiao-cheng to find out more. Striking a pose, this is Hsiao-cheng. It’s hard to believe that just a few months ago, she was bedridden due to a hip condition. She would often wake up in the middle of the night due to sharp pains, which also stopped her from dancing and even living a normal life. Hsiao-cheng Patient The most common symptom was that I would be woken up by the pain at night, unable to get out of bed, and I could only stay in bed. I usually had mild pain, and walking normally or being in class was uncomfortable. The pain would not stop and lasted for several months. It disturbed my life. When it hurt, I had to take painkillers to dance. I couldn’t perform many movements that affected my dancing. The most painful was my hip joint, and sometimes my knee also hurt. After the operation, I can now dance normally. After getting diagnosed at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, doctors formulated a precise treatment plan based on a 3D-printed model of her hip joint and completed a minimally invasive acetabular reconstruction surgery. Within three months of the surgery and rehabilitation, Hsiao-cheng was able to walk normally and even dance. Hsiao-cheng’s mother, who also had similar symptoms, underwent the same operation and successfully minimized the pain in her right hip joint. Hsiao cheng’s mother I used to have a heavy workload. When I walked a lot, the pain was above the knees and behind the thighs and buttocks. The pain would feel like a knife cutting me. The hospital utilized 3D printing technology to create a model of their hip joints. After that, doctors made a pre-operative plan by calculating the optimal rotation angle of the hip. Doctors say this 3D printing helped increase their surgery’s precision and speed. Hsu Kuei-hsiang Taipei Veterans General Hospital There are several benefits. The first one is that the pre-operative planning will be smoother, and you can know how the operation should be carried out. The operation time can also be shortened. In this example, the operation was originally expected to take two to three hours and may have caused a lot of blood loss, 500 milliliters to 600 milliliters. If it is shortened to one hour, the blood loss will be about 200 milliliters, which is a major reduction. 髖關節發育不良是嬰兒最常見的髖關節疾病,在台灣發病率約為1.3%,雖然罕見,但如果不及早治療和發現,可能會導致併發症,包括不對稱動作、走路一拐一拐,和腿長不等。 Developmental dysplasia of the hip is the most common hip disease in infants. The incidence of hip dysplasia in Taiwan is about 1.3%. Though quite rare, if not treated and detected early, the disease could result in complications including asymmetric movement, limping gait, and unequal leg lengths. Hsu Kuei-hsiang Taipei Veterans General Hospital The pain caused by hip joint dysplasia is knee pain, and sometimes there is pain behind the buttocks. Some people think it is piriformis syndrome or deep gluteal syndrome. Actually, it could be hip instability causing the pain. If both hip joints are uncomfortable, I would suggest you come to the clinic for a checkup. If you have an X-ray, you can actually find out whether you have hip joint dysplasia. Dr. Hsu says treatment becomes more difficult if the diagnosis is conducted later in life. He says if people have persistent soreness in their knees, hip joints, or buttocks, they are encouraged to get a check-up as soon as possible.
