Lovely Liasis: Savu Python Intro

Welcome to Species Center Stage for Thursday, July 13, 2023. This week we welcome our Savu Python, Archer, and begin our video journey about Liasis - more to come! The Savu Python (Liasis savuensis) is a small python native to the Island of Savu (Sawu) which is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia (Wingham, 2023), (Young, 2011). People first became aware of and documented the existence of Savu Pythons just within the last 20-25 years (Young, 2011). The Savu Python is listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and that organization reports the population trend of the species is decreasing, with decline primarily observed in mature snakes capable of reproduction. The main factors contributing to its decline are habitat loss and the exotic pet trade (Ruud, 2011), (Gillespie, et. al., 2021). There are no measures set-up to protect Savu Python habitat; however, trade of the snake itself is governed by international management and trade controls and is part of international legislation.
