Budaixi (Chinese hand puppets) master puppeteer demonstration

Recently Z and I attended a Budaixi workshop (Chinese hand puppetry) taught by master puppeteer Yanhong Zhuang, from a renowned puppet family of the Xiamen Hongyanzhuang Inheritance Center of Puppetry and Shadow Play in Fujian Province, China. Her 87 year-old father, renowned as the best Chou puppet performer in China, dazzled us with a demonstration of his incredible skills. Her daughter Raven was on hand to translate. In addition to showing off different typical characters you might see in a Budaixi play, traditionally trained Beijing Opera performers from Chinese Theatre Works joined in with brief demonstrations of how that character might move on stage in an opera. Budaixi, which is 400 years old, mimics the movement of opera performers. Yanhong told us that lately there is at least one opera troupe in China whose performers' movements mimic the puppets moves which is very interesting to see how the forms influence each other. http://www.wondersparkpuppets.com
