This video is a follow up to my previous posts treating a student at my physical education course in Taipei last year. As he suffered from thoracic and lumbar spine problems my next osteopathic approach was to evaluate and treat the sternal fascia and the pericardium as this 2 structures can have a huge influence on thoracic problems too! A less mobile or shortened sternal fascia can lead to thoracic imbalances and therefore to thoracic spine problems. If I see clients with thoracic spine issues, I always release the sternal fascia with several fascial treatment techniques! Further on I checked the pericardium: a less mobile pericardium can lead to thoracic spine problems too! The pericardium is connected to the sternum (lig. sternopericardiacum) and to the spine (lig. vertebropericardiacum). It is moving during the breathing rhythm up and down. If it is not mobile enough in its fascial tissue, it can force the surrounding fascial tissue to compensate and therefore force further restrictions in the connected tissues. In the video you can see how I manipulate the sternal fascia with a fascial release technique followed by a manipulation of the pericardium with a fascial recoil technique via the sternum. You can influence the pericardium via sternum cause of its fascial connection: lig. sternopericardiacum.
