January - at the fireside juxtaposes episodes of warmth, tenderness and contentment by the fireside (E major )with the more austere passages with rippling e minor semi quavers depicting the chilly winter wind swirling outside. Listen out for the thematic descending steps heard initially in the opening cello like bass line, which Tchaikovsky cleverly intertwines throughout and uses to herald the winter wind.
