Transcription of Dexter Gordon's tenor saxophone solo on "Number Four" from the 1955 album Daddy Plays the Horn. This album comes from a kind of “lost” period in Dexter Gordon’s career. He recorded it between two long prison sentences, which began in 1953 and lasted until his final release in 1959. On this album, you can really hear the difference in his playing compared to his late 40s bebop recordings and also the classic, well-known Blue Note albums of the early ’60s. These later recordings such as “Go!”, “A Swinging Affair” and “Our Man in Paris” reflect his mature style - for example, the distinctive ‘behind-the-beat’ phrasing that he is well known for today. On “Daddy Plays The Horn”, we can hear Dexter’s mature style beginning to emerge.
