According to the UN, More than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia where FGM is practiced. FGM is mostly carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15. According to available data, more than 3 million girls are estimated to be at risk of FGM annually. Female genital mutilation (FGM) can have severe physical and psychological consequences, including immediate pain, infections, and trauma, as well as long-lasting psychological distress such as anxiety and low self-esteem. Socially, FGM leads to stigmatization and marginalization of affected individuals, contributing to discrimination and exclusion from opportunities. Efforts to address FGM require sensitive approaches that prioritize survivors' well-being and rights while addressing cultural beliefs and social norms perpetuating the practice. In 2012, February 6th was officially designated as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation by the United Nations General Assembly. This declaration aimed to intensify and focus global efforts towards eradicating this harmful practice. Over the past decade, the Joint Programme has been actively involved in supporting survivors of Female Genital Mutilation. Through strategic investments in survivor-led initiatives, the program has prioritized empowerment, self-agency, and access to essential services for affected individuals. However, the road to ending Female Genital Mutilation by 2030 requires even more concerted and sustained efforts. It is imperative that we enhance our strategies with greater precision, coordination, and dedication. Each survivor's journey toward reclaiming their autonomy and well-being is a powerful testament to the collective endeavor to eliminate this harmful practice from our societies.
