Embark on a journey with me from Ohio to Minnesota to interview a man who has spent 50 of his 75 years riding the rails, living as a professional hobo and mastering the art of survival. In this episode we dive deep into a disappearing way of life and learn how to make Tin Can Coffee, a Poor Man’s Sandwich and the legendary Mulligan Stew. Hobos were migratory workers who emerged after the U.S. Civil War; many of them were “homeless by choice," and some even had wives and children to support at home but were poor and and so they worked in order to travel, riding freight trains to get from job to job and when they were able, to send money back home or take it there themselves. Tin Can Coffee / Hobo Coffee: Many campers use complicated gadgets to make coffee, but our hobo guest, Craig, shows a simpler method. Poor Man’s Sandwich: During the Great Depression, sandwiches were survival food—made from whatever leftovers were on hand. Tight budgets and empty fridges led to “poor man sandwiches,” where people combined lard, onions, sugar or even ketchup to fill their bellies. Our hobo friend shares his favorite variation and explains why these humble creations kept travelers going. Mulligan Stew / Hobo Stew Recipe: Mulligan stew is thought to have originated in the early 1900s when American hobos pooled whatever meat and vegetables they could find. It’s a flexible, budget‑friendly dish that remains relevant today. If you enjoy this video: please like, subscribe and ring the bell so you won’t miss future travel vlogs and historic recipes.
